New Web solution prevents waste of time at Construction Site

MALMÖ/LULEÅ. Researchers have concluded that only every third workhour is productive at Construction Site. At Construction Fair Öresund 2013 on April 23-24th, IT Company Structural Design Software in Europe AB (StruSoft) will demonstrate the cloud service SyncroSite, which makes the Construction Process more efficient.

SyncroSite is an application for more efficient Production Management of the construction work. Time on a construction site can be used more efficiently. Researchers have shown that one-third of the work time at Construction Site is productive, one third is devoted to preparation and a third is totally waste of time.

– SyncroSite allows for a more efficient workflow at the construction site so that the work can be carried out without interruption, says Lars B who is the Marketing Manager at StruSoft.

SyncroSite is a Web service developed by Designtech projektsamverkan AB (Designtech) in collaboration with StruSoft and IntelliWork AB (IntelliWork). Researchers at the Construction- and Industrial Logistics departments at Luleå University of Technology has developed the method together with the leading Construction companies. The development has been partly financed by the VINNOVA/Bygginnovationen and SBUF. Pilots are conducted together with NCC, Nåiden and Byggmästar’n Skåne. The general production timeplan is imported from the database. The Production Time Schedule is divided to a manageable Production Activities that shows processes in a transparent way, from the individual work team's daily tasks to a total overview of the entire construction project from the Site Managers view.

– Using the Web services give the Site Manager control that all required conditions are in place before the work begins. The production work can therefore be completed without disturbing interruptions.

This enables smooth and efficient workflow without barriers and cut waiting times. If an interruption even though occurs, the work staff can change to another well prepared production activity. The effective time of the employee becomes higher and productivity increases. The total lead-time can be reduced for the construction project.

The web service keeps a watchful eye on the workflow. The unique thing about the service is that the supervisor's is informed if any preparation activity isn´t completed on time. That reduces the risk for delays. Work on the construction site becomes smoother and resources are synchronized. But it's not just about the staff. You can also control the use of various resources such as cranes and construction site hoists so that critical tasks gets the highest priority.

SyncroSite is also an aid to monitor deliveries of materials. The service automatically calculates when call-off´s has to be made. This is based on the agreed delivery time and when the production activity shall begin. If the task is changed and gets another start time, call-off notice time is automatically adjusted.

– The service helps to reduce the lead-time and reduce building costs, says Lars.

The construction industry is very interested to find solutions increasing efficiency and reduce expenditure. SyncroSite is our contribution. We look forward to discuss the methodology and application with Construction companies visiting the Construction Fair Öresund 2013.

Facts about SyncroSite

SyncroSite is one of the first Software Products for Production Management at the Construction Sites. SyncroSite is a Web-based system, which means that no installations are required.

The research groups at Construction and Industrial Logistics at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) has been working on streamlining production at construction sites for over 10 years. This work has been carried out in close collaboration with Swedish construction companies and laid the basis for SyncroSite. SyncroSite is now a collaboration between the StruSoft IntelliWork and Designtech. The development is partly financed by the Bygginnovationen and SBUF. Pilots conducted together with NCC Construction Sweden, PEAB, Nåiden Bygg and Byggmästarn i Skåne.

SyncroSite contains, among other things, functionality to prepare production work assignments, coordinate the use of shared resources, automatic revisions of call-off time schedules, prioritize usage of machinery and critical equipment etc.

SyncroSite benefits includes simplified preparation of production activities, less risk that skilled workers are hindered in their work, reduced risk of shortfalls detected late, as well as it is easier for skilled workers to find equipment and materials.
